ask the Dr something like giving you an epidural(yes, the one used during deliveries).
Don't say you want a local anaesthetic.Ask for the epidural. It is possible! It is possible to have your surgery under regional block or spinal anesthesia. You will not touch anything from your abdomen down to your leg. The problem with spinal block is that it has a time confine of around 3-4 hrs before you start to feel something again. If the surgery will be longer than that you will be better of with epidural anesthesia. it is also a regional block.
My sister-in-law have a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago and they used an epidural. She is doing great.
