It depends on the extent of the injury. A spinal cord that is "bruised", can recover function, just resembling any other bruised tissue. This is the case in some of the "miracle" cures that you may have read roughly or seen. There was a period of paralysis, and afterwards the faith healer, witch doctor, herbalist or whatever intervened. Meanwhile, the spinal cord was recovering on its own. The fraud later takes credit for the "cure." But a cut or transected cord cannot be healed. A partially transected cord may retain some function. But in attendance is no way to regenerate those nerves and the patient is left next to pain and paralysis. Not yet, although take a look at the NASA net site they seem to be making some progress.
