Can your spine still verbs to grow after a spinal fusion??

hi,
I am 14 years old, and had a spinal fusion( for a slipped vertabrae in the lower back). will my spine verbs to grow, if i am still growing? ( i know my legs are still growing)
thanks for all answers!!=)

Answers:    In most cases, the fusion is augmented by a process called fixation, goal the placement of metallic screws (pedicle screws often made from titanium), rods or plates, or cage to stabilize the vertebra to facilitate bone fusion. The fusion process typically takes 6-12 months after surgery. During in this time external bracing (orthotics) may be required. External factors such as smoking, osteoporosis, reliable medications, and heavy activity can prolong or even prevent the fusion process. If fusion does not come about, patients may require reoperation.

Some newer technologies are being introduced which avoid fusion and preserve spinal motion. Such procedures, such as artificial disc replacement, are being offered as alternatives to fusion, but enjoy not yet been adopted on a rampant basis in the US. Their advantage over fusion have not been well established. Minimally invasive techniques hold also been introduced to reduce complications and recovery time for lumbar spinal fusion.
For patients who hold a severe deformity and/or those who have a very rigid curvature, an anterior release of the disc space (removal of the disc from the front) may first be required. This involves approaching the front of the spine any through an open incision or with a scope (thoracoscopic technique) and releasing the disc space. After the discs at the appropriate level of the spine have been removed, bone (either the patient's own bone and/or cadaver bone) is added to the disc space to allow it to fuse together.

Removing the discs allows for a better reduction of the spine and also results within a better fusion. This is especially important if the patient is a young child and have a lot of growth left. If just the posterior portion of the spine is fused, the anterior column can verbs to grow, and loss of reduction can result ("crankshafting"). Fusing the spine anteriorly prevents this process.

Your spine will continue to grow, and the fusion will have factored your age into the process. You don't want to worry, but you can discuss this with your doctor.

Good luck.
