Cheerleading after spinal fusion?
I had spinal fusion surgery for scoliosis june first of last year. cheer tryouts are coming up in almost a month or two, and i was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to prepare for tryouts and acquire my fitness and skills back to where they were back surgery?
Answers: Hi Kasey,
Be careful about stressing your spine too much before it have fused enough. As the other person said, check with your doctor around the timeline for when you can be doing things. I'm guessing that some of the more athletic moves will have to wait until one year past your surgery. Your surgeon may know how to have you work with a PT or perhaps a trainer that know about your restrictions.
As for exercises, you can always swim which will get your tolerance and strength back. At six months post-op, I'm guessing that you've been cleared to jog, so that's something to start on.
I really hope cheer works out for you!

First, check next to your surgeon, and make sure he clears you for cheerleading...it is important for the school to see your clearance, but, more meaningful the he talks to you about your ability and exercises...
