Choose General Anesthesia or Spinal Anesthesia?
Okay, I just got confirmed that I am going to have an arthroscopic surgery on my ankle today. The doc. give me an option to choose from general or spinal anesthesia. If I choose, spinal, then I will be awake the in one piece time, watching the procedure on the tv screen. If I choose the general, then I will be completely knock up and probably will be spending more time in the recovery room.
I'm currently 16 and have have surgery from my ankle injury 2 times already this year, so I've had both spinal and general anesthesia before. Except since the first surgery be long and more emergency, they knocked me out with spinal anesthesia. I didn't have any issues beside headaches after the first surgery with spinal.
The thing is, I'm really interested surrounded by medical field, so I think it would be once in a life span time opportunity to get to be in the operation room and observe the procedure. It wil definately seize my attention, except I'm alittle bit nervous...what do you think?
Answers: Spinals are the BEST ANESTHETIC EVER. For most people, they are smaller amount risky than general, you feel better afterward, and if you want to know what's going on, you can. (If you don't, we can sedate you so you don't know and/or don't care).
Headaches after spinals are much rarer in our time, because we use needles with special points that are less likely to create leakage of spinal fluid, which is what gives you the headache.
If for some reason, the spinal doesn't work to your happiness, or the case goes on too long and you get squirmy, we can any give you sedation or switch to general.
I'd go near the spinal.
get knocked out, the doctor needs to concentrate on the surgery, not trying to explain everything to you while he is doing surgery.ask if you cant come final and sit in on someone elses surgery sometime ok wanting to WATCH your surgery is just gross and theres no guarantee you wont freak out which would be a huge problem
pleaseeeeee get the common who cares how long you are in recovery its not that long anyway
Go for spinal. With your interest contained by Medicine, you will have a first hand knowledge of what is going on and probably an indelible outline too. Secondly the recovery as you rightly mentioned is shorter from spinal, so Go for it and ALL THE BEST TO YOU!!
Final point to note. If under spinal anaesthesia you agree on that you do not want to monitor what is happening you can close your eyes and doze off You do not have this preference in GA. Do the spinal as they probably will give you a little medication to relieve you relax. Very cool to watch, as not many times do you get to see inside your ankle
