Answers: Hi Teresa,
Spinal cord stimulator implantation has certainly come a long approach! I assist with these surgeries often. They are done as an out-patient procedure. You are given wonderful drugs to drift off to sleep while we are preparing to insert the head. Once we start with the positioning of the lead to find the ideal coverage for you; you are more awake and can have a word to us to tell us when you have the best feelings. After finding adjectives of the coverage areas; you can, once again, snooze on!
The group that I work with is a huge anesthesiology practice; about 150 doctors and ten of those specialize in Pain Management/Medicine.
I own had back surgery once, about ten years ago and I surface great knowing that if I ever do have problems again, I know exactly who to see!
Good luck to you; let me know how you're doing.
Spinal cord stimulation surgery is for the treatment of chronic pain. It produces mild electrical pulses to stimulate specific nerves along the spine. What the stimulation is supposed to do is block the niggle signals before they reach the brain and instead create a sensation called paresthesia.
Whether or not it's the best route to walk is up to you and your doctor as how effective it is at managing pain differs depending on how your particular system react. Have you tried nerve blocks? Physical therapy? Medications? These should all be tried previously resorting to this surgery. The surgery itself is on an outpatient basis and recovery is tends to be truthfully quick, but as it requires more time commitment as do all surgeries, you may want to try the other options first.
