Do you still own to lay flat on your hindmost for 24 hours when you attain an epidural or spinal anesthesia?

I know you did 25 years ago, is this still true today? I was told if I moved before 24 hours that I'd get a migraine headache.

Answers:    Nope, not an iota more.

A spinal is an injection into a sac of fluid under the spinal cord:

If a hole remains in the sac, and spinal fluid leaks out, it can basis a headache. It's not a migraine, it's called a post dural-puncture headache (PDPH). They're pretty rare from spinal anesthesia, because we use needles with special points that walk off less of a hole in the sac. They're fairly adjectives when non-anesthesiologists do spinal taps, or some radiology procedures that involve injection into the spinal fluid.

The top picture here is the older style needle i.e. more likely to cause PDPH; the other 2 are pencil point needles that are much less credible to do so:

I don't know if lying flat actually prevented headaches back later, or just delayed them for 24 hours.

Spinals - best anesthetic EVER.
Nope. The belief was that it would prevent a spinal headache. If you get a spinal headache it is more pronounced when you stand, but lying down won't prevent it. A spinal headache is special, and more likely when using a larger bore spinal needle, multiple attempts, and a blunt needle tip (as opposing one with a pencil-point needle tip). It it more likely to come about in younger people, females, and with pregnancy.

Talk near your anesthesiologist about your concerns. With some procedures, such as a laparoscopy, you would likely be much better off next to general anesthesia. Your anesthetic plan will depend on your medical history, the procedure, and your consent. Good luck.
In my experience, you only have to lay flat for more or less two hours, and then they slowly elevate the head of the bed.
