Answers: omg, the dr needed to do a spinal tap on my husband and he couldn't stop squirming cuz he was so scared and it hurt so much so they have to load him up full of drugs (so he couldn't feel anything - he didn't even know where he be at or what he was doing there) before they'd try it one last time past giving up cuz the dr had to be very precise in getting the nozzle perfectly into the right spot...scary!! but soo funny seeing him all drugged up...he loved everyone contained by that room for about 15 minutes while his high wore off :)
so I'm sure there's some incapacitate with the puncture but not enough to significantly affect the person
Good technique, simple as that. Spinal tap (lumbar punctures UK) are quite a risky procedure. You need to check for raised intercranial pressure- because taking spinal fluid surrounded by this circumstance could likely kill the patient surrounded by a situation known as coning. This is where the brain is pulled downwards through a hole in the skull and crushed.
The spinal cord is a dense collection of impudence fibres. It is covered (like the brain is) by meninges. There are 3 layers all beside fluid between them and the spine which is called CerebroSpinal Fluid or CSF. This is what the physician is aiming for. Even if the needle went into the cord itself, it is relatively small and the nerves can treat up quite well (assuming a clean syringe is used).
