Had a spinal touch / lumbar puncture today?
I had a lumbar puncture today and I was told to lay flat until tomorrow. My back is hurting from lay down for so long in the same position. Anything I can do? Its killing me to lay close to this. Any suggestions? I'm lightheaded so I know I need to stay like this. But it is so uncomfortable.
Answers: I'm sorry you hold been told to lay flat all day. Are you sure they said adjectives day and till tomorrow? Maybe they made a mistake because I looked up other websites and here is one link that says to slouch flat for one to three hours http://www.medicinenet.com/lumbar_punctu...
Others said to lie flat for 20min to one hour. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/lumbar-...
This is one that had the most number of hours that I found currently

"You will be asked to remain flat, or nearly flat, for 6 to 8 hours after the test. Lumbar puncture near fluid collection may also be part of other procedures, particularly a myelogram ( X-ray or CT scan after dye has be inserted into the cerebral spinal fluid)."
I had lumbar puncture for a myelogram and rather than have spinal fluid removed, contrast was put into the spinal fluid. Same space and puncture site as a spinal tap. I was told to lay flat for at lowest an hour and the nurse read on the instructions to raise the bed at a 35 degree angle. I walked out of the outpatient center after I ate some cookies and drank some marine. I told the nurse I didn't need a wheelchair. Anyway if I were you, I would call the hospital and see if that's what you really enjoy to do. You may feel sore at the puncture site or even around the muscles of the puncture site. I understand the reason for need to lay flat the first hour or so to prevent a spinal headache but all day till tomorrow? Did they say why? If I be you I'd call and/or look at your discharge papers. Maybe someone made the mistake of telling you to lay flat all daylight? I'd call the hospital and tell them if I were you. There's no basis for you to lay flat that way if you don't have to. Good luck. The phone number should be on the discharge paper to telephone and ask to speak with the radiology departments dr. The dr. may actually be listed on the discharge rag so you can ask him directly if you should be lying flat till tomorrow.
I also wanted to mention that you should be drinking lots of fluids to prevent dehydration and lightheadedness. Eating may also decrease lightheadedness but if you have to stay on your final, how would you eat, use the bathroom, and shower? I really doubt you would have to stay that way unless you hold a special situation that I'm not aware of where the hospital dr. who did the lumbar pucture told you to specifically lay flat till tomorrow.
