Has anyone have a spinal fusion operation ? C- spine?
I need answers abt, time in the hospital, pain stratum. recovery time at home, sucsess of the surgery, complains of years after ( maintiance). any other info into this is helpful add links if you see it compulsory. It is to correct pain i am having radiating down my arm , hand and obviously neck. also my dr. has mentions a nerve anaesthetizing op. for the nerve pain, but i had the facet block injection and that didnt facilitate at all. so i tend to think the nerve block wouldnt abet either, but he wants to try that first/ TY all
Answers: I have a spinal fusion 2 years ago. I spend 8 hours on the operating table because they found more wrong than x rays showed. I spent 4 days in the hospital afterwards. My pain level be not bad I was hooked up to a morphine pump. I have 2 rods and 8 screw from the surgery. They have you get out of bed and walk around next to a walker and they will have you practice going up stairs if you have stairs. My retrieval was 3 months. I was not allowed to drive the first month and than not move about back to work for 2 months. It healed and there is not a light of day that does not go by that I thank my self for doing it. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself. 2 years subsequently I still feel good except I do have some lifetime restrictions of not man able to lift anything heavier than 30 pounds. Push or pull heavier than 70.
I have a nerve block and an epidural before surgery and they did nothing for me.
well-mannered luck and i hope it helps.
I have had four backbone operations involving spinal fusion with rods and pins each time. Unfortunately it take care of the acute pain I was have but you end up with chronic pain most times. I am fused from T10 adjectives the way down. My last back surgery be four years ago and the pain is progressively getting worse. Sometimes there is no other option (as contained by my case) but surgery. I did nerve root injection, therapy etc., but the end result be surgery. I am on medication for pain. Fentenyl patch as well as hydrocodone but it is not enough to confer me comfort most days. I wish you well and will pray for you that the surgery will be the answer. I had spinal fusion within 2002, and I was in the hospital for 5 days. I was allergic to the morphine so I took oxycotin instead. It be a very painful process, but with the physical dream therapy I recovered and my back felt great. In 2005, the rods broke and I had to hold them removed, but my back is still fine and it doesn't hurt at all compared to how it used to hurt before the surgery. The one and only problems I have is that my scar on my hip (where the took the bone to graph with the rods) is still sensitive and hurts when something scratch it.
My best friend had the operation about 3 weeks ago. He says he feel much better. Have the operation recovery time is like 4 weeks although my friend still can't sit for long periods of time or drive he still feel a huge pain relief The best advice would be is for you to dance to your doctor he knows best.
i did last week its great with morphine i've have that 69 times ;) oh yea!
most of my patients are in the hospital about 2 days at the most some go home the subsequent day. Depending on how tolerant your body is to pain meds (being that the pain you may already be on percocet or vicodin for pain) it can be fundamentally painful...but the doctor prescribes medication for you during recovery. I have have some patients say that the pain is nothing and others are contained by so much pain they need the meds every time they are due...just depends on your own dull pain tolerance and how much pain meds you were taking prior to the surgery.
one recommendation is to enjoy family buy some icecream or italian ices. ask the doctor if you will be on clear fluids for the first night cause afterwards you can only have italian ices or other water rime flavored whatever flavor you like. the hospital should have this but sometimes they don't other have you favorite flavor...
don't know about years after as i only contract with patients while they are in the hospital but i have have patients in for a repeat surgery because the first on didn't take
