Has anyone have reconstructive lumbar spinal surgery?

What are the alternatives? I've tried steroids and acupunture and I swim routinely...this surgery seems quite major.

Answers:    I own 2 herniated lumbar disks, and have successfully avoided surgery for several years. My goal is to keep avoiding it. Keys are losing counterbalance, strengthening your core (ab and back) muscles, and not doing anything too crazy (downhill skiing is out, for instance). If interested, you can find a strengthening program here: http://www.YourHealthyBack.com .

My grandfather had it recently and unfortunately, I may hold to have it sometime in the future. If the steroids and the acupuncture dont work, surgery is usually the closing option. Once you get past the screw and plates being put in your body, you should be fine. No, its not a very comfortable surgery and rehab is a must afterwards, but unhappily, it is necessary for back problems that persist.
