How is a spinal fusion done?
Answers: A quick version.
The vertebrae are first cleaned of any calcium deposits that may be affecting nerve bundles. Titanium rods are after fitted to the vertebrae and screwed to the bones. The area is then packed near bone chips, collected either from the patients thigh bone or sometimes cadaver bone chips. Over the ensuing year the bone chips grow together and make a solid mass. The vertebrae are consequently immovable so as not to pinch or pressure any nerves.
