How much will spinal surgery restrain my actions?
I am a 16 year old female with scoliosis and I am majoring surrounded by dance. I am very self contious of my curved spine and I suffer from pain when I rumba. Will I ever be able to dance again if I get surgery?
Answers: I enjoy no doubt that you'll dance after surgery. I'm just not sure what your ability will be afterwards. Your idea of dance and mine (I'm a computer science major) are different, I'm sure. What I mean is that you enjoy a much better idea of what you have to be able to do to be successful contained by dance. So its good that you're trying to set your expectations.
If you're fusing only a couple of level in the middle of your back, you may not notice it extremely much. If you have a long fusion or its low, you'll notice it much more. Because you may not be as flexible, your routines may have to be modified to avoid need to bend in ways that you won't be capable of. As another replied, your recovery time will be a year. You might know how to do some stuff after 6 months, but that will depend on how well you've healed and what your doctor has to enunciate. But I haven't see your back nor your x-rays so you should be asking your scoliosis specialist. He'll give you better answers.
Look at this video (she had scoliosis video and loves dance. She shows how she can still dance after, and all the moves she can do, she can even do the splits better than before! It's similar to a video diary of pics from before and after her surgery, pretty cool. there's a lot of different ones on youtube, so they're really cool!!)

If you want more (they're not all dancers though) dance to www.youtube.com and type in 'scoliosis surgery' in the search box!!
Ask a surgeon or other doctor. Usually depends on individual circumstances.
A man broke his mitt and went to see the doctor.
The man asked,"Will I be able to play the piano after my hand heal?"
Doc says, "Sure, I don't see why not."
Man says, " That's good, I other wanted to play the piano and never did before."
whether you dance again or not depends how desperate the scoliosis is, and how extensive the surgery has to be...the only one that can advise you would be the surgeon that does the procedure. OMG..it depends honey but at 16 you should take home a full recovery and be able to dance and as long as you start rehabilitation as soon as you are competent to I think you will be just fine.good luck and God bless you.
Yes, and the discomfort will be less. But the problem is that you won't be able to dance for a year or two. O_O ask your doc
