How would a rectal exam assist doctors to determine if a spinal injury is present?

I read this story here:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080422/ap_o...
and I am not a medical professional, so I can't figure out why a rectal exam would be helpful. Wouldn't an MRI or an X-Ray be more conclusive to ruling out any spinal column injury the construction worker may have sustained?

Answers:    The automatic criticism of the sphincter to digital contact will tell the doctor if the spinal cord has been shabby at a certain level. If the reaction is missing, at hand has been damage.
possibly they just wanted to check out your azz before the MRI or Xray
