I own Cervical Myelopathy. Should I hold a spinal fusion, laminectomy or permit it dance for immediately?

I have had cervical myelopathy with stenosis and occasional impertinence root compression for 8 years, that we know of. I will need surgery sooner or later. My neurosurgeon is leaving it up to me whether to enjoy a fusion at two levels (C4-5 and C6-7), a laminectomy or to wait. He says that here are some significant risks with surgery. He added that he can't say that it would make me better but he can potentially minimize adjectives risk for injury or surgery could make me worse. I am not a candidate for artificial discs at this time. I have hyperreflexia within the legs and some loss of reflexes in my arms and weakness. I enjoy moderate pain and fibromyalgia, which I believe came from the cervical myelopathy. If I forego the surgery for now and in that is more compression of my spinal cord what are the chances that further disability can be reversed? Should I postpone surgery and hope for greater advancements and developments for treatment?

Answers:    I can empathize beside you...my situation was very closely the same...however I suffered far longer...my choice to enjoy the surgery was finally forced upon me when the neurological changes began occurring beyond my control.suddenly could no longer even drive without risk not knowing when any movement would cause TIA symptoms as if mini stokes...very scary...as capably as migraine headaches beyond description causing delirium and misery beyond tolerance. I feared the 50/50 risk factor...my Neursurgeon have me wear a cervical collar for several months to see whether the immobilization helped alleviate my misery at all...IT DID! Amazingly! Then in Oct 2000 on the 12th, I be my Neurosurgeons 13th patient he ever performed the spinal fusion upon [at C3/4,C4/5,C5/6] with a bone graft taken from my hip[I chose not to hold cadaver bone used], and titanium plates & screws were secured in place. My 2&1/2hr surgery terminated up being nearly six hours when the Dr. discovered over 100 bone spurs within my cervical area & he needed to with care grind & remove! Amazingly, I went home from the hospital the next day [again my personal choice]. My Neursurgeon call me his 'miracle angel' and I call him my Teddy bear Angel~ This choice may have save my life~ but was one of the scariest decisions I have ever have to make. The recovery period be long, with several different cervical collars including a bone growth collar I wore additionally 3-4 hours a day to encourage tough healing. I reccommned you do ALL the research you possibly can...then only "YOU" can build the ultimate choice. I can honestly say I am so glad I finally made the choice to have this done! By the opening...the hip area where they took the bone from was more rough than the cervical surgery itself, if you can believe that! Amazing~ I wish you comfort & guidance in your choice~ Take care~
