In 2 days I will be undergoing Spinal Fusion Surgery. I am having my entire Thoracic T-1 through T-12 fused together and I am REALLY nervous give or take a few it. My right lung has been collapsed since I was 5 years old-fashioned and my heart moved over to the right side of my chest as a result. My left lung is hyper-inflated and I have brochiactisus scarring on both lungs as well as severe asthma. I know how risky this surgery is for a fighting fit person, however it is even more so with me...
Would an anti-anxiety drug help me become quiet down? Which one works the best and does not create problems for anesthesia?

Answers: There is nothing over-the-counter that is going to help you but you could without a doubt talk to your doctor about something. Did you want to take it presently or just before surgery? If it's just in the past surgery ask for a pre-med, a drug that relaxes you before you get to the operating room. Only the anesthesiologist can know for sure what will and won't interact with the standard anesthetic that you'll be having and can determine - given your weakened lung state, whether you can have something or not.
If you want something to get hold of you through until the day of the surgery then you can certainly settle to your regular doc about that. He should know the best thing to prescribe for you and should be able to recommend you on how long it is safe to take.
Good luck with your surgery, I know they'll pilfer good care of you and remember, you may be high risk but if you be too high of a risk they wouldn't do the surgery at all.
