Is spinal surgery totally treacherous?
My dad is getting a tumor taken off his spinal cord soon and i'm so nervous i need to know some facts give or take a few this..are there huge risks?
Answers: The surgery can be risky if in the wrong hands. Make sure your dad go to the best Neurosurgeon in your area. Make sure the Neurosurgeon uses intra-operative monitoring. The monitoring helps the surgeon know when to stop adjectives.
Intra-operative monitoring "can be helpful in clarifying anatomical structures that have be distorted by degenerative disease, congenital anomalies, revision surgery, tumor and/or inflammatory processes that may obscure normal anatomic relationships and surgical landmarks. It can support identify new systematic (nervous system) impairment and identify or separate nervous system structures (for instance, around/in a tumor or scar tissue), and can demonstrate which tracts or nerves are still functional. When a surgeon have the benefit of early warning of altered neurological functions, they can intervene immediately and avoid or reverse the potential for injury." Make sure your dad also showers next to Hibiclens (it can be bought at Walgreens or Wal-mart)at least 48 hours before the surgery to help cut back on chances of infection.
Again the biggest thing is finding a qualified Neurosurgeon who actually explains the surgery to you and your dad. Any surgeon who does not spend time explaining the procedures, the risk, the benefits, the possible complications is not a surgeon your dad should be in motion to. Good Luck.
I've had spinal surgery and everything went fine something about reshaping my spine i don't know. If they dont accedentley cut or dammage the spinal cord, or block the spinal fluid, he willl most likley be ok. he will bee surrounded by pain for a while, but hell get overit. soon
Yes, its very death-defying. But it must be more serious to remove the tumor and do the surgery. sorry to say but yes there are risks... i just hope you guys found a upright doctor and everything heals right... the spinal cord is very sensitive and fragile... ill speak a prayer for your dad
