Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Surgery (Question give or take a few Recovery)?

I am having surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (L-5 region) in about three weeks, I live alone and live on a 3rd floor walk-up, after the surgery going on for how long will I be able to perform normal actions (go up and down stairs) and be able to go back to work? Also I am contained by incredible pain when walking and standing, will this usually be corrected after surgery? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Answers:    Yes, your backache SHOULD be corrected by surgery, but not immediately. In some cases, patients are better the day after surgery, but usually you will have some post op torment. You can resume normal activities in just about 2 weeks, (approx) but you may not bend, lift, twist or drive for about 2 weeks. We permit our patients go up and down steps right after surgery as tolerated, and you will be doing some sort of walkng daily according to your own docs recommendations. You wont be bedridden as it will brand name your recovery worse. As far as return to work, thats up to your doc and depends on the type of work you do. Our patients go back between 2 and 12 weeks post op depending. Hope this help and best of luck
It is hard to say - each creature has a different recovery period. When I worked on an ortho surgical component, some back patients did great and some had slow recovery spell.

The third floor walk up might be an issue - most doctors recommend not doing too many stairs in the origin. Physical therapy will make sure that you can either pace up the stairs or send you to rehab until you can.

Most of the time you will be out of work for a couple weeks = this is major surgery and you will need time to get better.

Good luck
Take it from a guy who has had 5 back surgeries and know what kind of pain you are having because I enjoy been there. Like any surgery, the recovery time is up to you and how your body react. Under normal circumstances, you should be able to walk the stairs after a couple of days and return to work after a week or two, depending on what type of work you do. You probably will enjoy to wear a support belt for a month and positively no heavy lifting during this healing time. Good luck.
