Answers: A herniated disk can often times be very painful, even disabling. Any injury to the spinal cord can be serious..especially when nerves are involved. But, you are other entitled to and should obtain a second opinion. All options should be discussed- dream therapy and braces may be an option. Also all the possible side effects should be presented to you, for both sides, with or next to the surgery. Back injuries are very sensitive since everyone reacts differently and the back/spine is very gauzy. I recommend obtaining several opinions, learning the ins and outs of the injury/surgery and speaking near individuals that have had similar operations. Back surgery is adjectives but it is also a very serious ordeal. Think it through, back injuries can alter your life and sometimes head to different levels of paralysis.
Unfortunately, it really does sound like surgery is needed. If at hand was just a bulging of the disc, it could be postponed; however, with a herniation within could be some major complications with nerve blight.
You may want to get a copy of the MRI and get a 2nd opinion merely to be sure that you are getting correct information.
There is another option possibly. A traction system which pulls upward on the back of the head and the chin simultaneously is used every light of day for a specified amount of time, effectively pulling the herniated disc inward and solving the problem many times.
Get a second opinion from another doctor, and mention this alternative.
I would hope that your Doctor has earn your trust? This injury, the cost is the result of Malpractice fee's if the Doctor causes your Sister more harm then angelic. If the Doctor harms and not heal. Your going to sue them for all that there worth, hence the pricey levy. I'm not a specialist. I advise that you reflect on the Many "What-ifs" that are out there. I hope that you chose sagely. I hope that your Doctor isn't a Quack that's useless really. Good Luck! Herniations are tricky. There is something called spinal decompression that has helped some empire with herniations. If she wants to avoid surgery maybe it's worth a try but the disc pressing on the spinal cord and impertinence roots is indicative of a pretty severe herniations.
Compression of spinal cord. Surgery a must! ALWAYS get a second opinion! Good luck and chose a very biddable and reputable surgeon. kjl
