Should spinal unit really be call 'spinal units'?

because if you have injured your spine ie broken your back they cannot do anything for you and you are sent home in a wheelchair for enthusiasm?

Answers:    You don't always become paralysed if you've broken your back, you don't always hurt your spinal cord. I'm a dancer and a gym coach I've met lots of people who've been in spinal unit, who with the right physiotherapy, have been competent to lead full lives again.

Yes they should be called spinal units, that's what they are, it's clear concise and to the point.

If I said someone be on the oncology ward, most people wouldn't know what oncology meant (cancer ward normally)
If I said someone was surrounded by the spinal unit, they would automatically know something was wrong with their hindmost.
Hi, I can only speak highly of the Stoke Mandeville Spinal Injuries Centre in Buckinghamshire, as this is the solely "spinal unit" I have had any dealings next to.
About 10 years ago, I was involved in a high-speed car misfortune on the M1, when I was hit in the back and catapult into a nearby field. I broke three vertebrae in my spine, and bruised the spinal cord. I be paralysed from waist level downwards.
The Specialists at the Hospital patched me up, and once the swelling & bruising had receded, I have to re-learn how to walk again. I was one of the lucky ones, as, apart from a slightly stiff back in a minute, I am completely recovered.
Even if the spinal cord is broken, and the paralysis is permanent, this does not mean it's the end of the world and they transport you home in a wheelchair. The Physiotherapists are able to give guidance and training as well as exercise so that a good quality of duration is reached.
So, yes, they still should be called spinal units, hope this answer help!
What would you call them then? As you can see from the answers you've already got, spinal injury doesn't indicate paralysis. Spinal units are to do with treatment, rehabilitation, surgery - so many things. Broken back don't always mean severed spinal cords, bones will mend or can be fixed with bone graft, metal rods for example.

I know - it happened to my son and he now lives a full and active life span.
