Spinal anesthesia?
i am having a varicocele repaired. I have elected to have spinal anesthesia. I be wondering if I will have a foley catheter put into my bladder. If I do not have a catheter, how will i know if I need to urinate if I am numb from the waist down. Will my body hold it contained by, or will i pee all over myself?
Answers: For a varicocele repair, probably not. The decision whether or not to place a catheter depends on a lot of things, including the procedure individual done (sometimes the bladder has to be empty), the patient's other medical problems, and the duration of the procedure.
Spinal anesthesia does NOT knock you out, but sometimes we add sedation that does. That's something to discuss with your anesthesiologist.
As for urination, spinals make happen urinary retention, so it's unlikely that you'll wet yourself. For your surgery, the spinal will last only in the order of 2 hours (but being able to pee might take a touch longer to return).
In recovery room, if your bladder is full and you can't pee, they may do a straight cath which is putting a catheter in just long satisfactory to empty your bladder. If you're numb, you won't feel it.
Spinal anesthesia is the BEST ANESTHETIC EVER. We can always relate who had a spinal in recovery room, because they look and consistency great.
Good luck with your surgery!
Don't be so worry, you'll have time to travel before all this. Secondly, you won't be on anesthetic for so long and lying down you won't even need to pee. You spend the integral without? You're too nervous for nothing. Calm down, zilch will happen.
Take care and good luck near this. your doctor may or may not put a catheter. Usually after the operation, your diet will gradually be resumed. If you are unable to urinate, you might have a catheter placed on you. However, doctors and nurses will first assess if you hold a full bladder by palpating it and if you cant urinate, a foley catheter might help.
I was under the hollow that any time you have a spinal block/epidural you also need to have a catheter as you lose sensation and your flair to control your bladder. They will put in the spinal first and then the catheter so you won't feel any discomfort. I have an epidural during child birth and a spinal block for a Ceasarean Section and trust me I was a bit freaked out about catheters before I'd have one. And now? I think they are great, saves you have to go to the toilet when you are recovering. I had spinal anesthesia for a colon surgery and they put in a catheter while I be asleep. The spinal knocked me out. I just peed normally and didn't touch a thing. The bag filled up and never know it.
I know this is kind of skirting around what you asked but thought I would give you my experience.
