Spinal cord injury; how to excersize stomach muscles?
I am in a wheelchair with a spinal cord injury at T2 level (for those that know) or at nipple rank and am quite athletic. The only problem is my arms are pretty strong and getting toned, but I can't figure out a mode to work out my stomach fact that i can't even use the muscles to do sit ups. If someone could tell me how i could possibly stimulate the muscles so i could lose some stomach fat that would be awesome! I am already aware of Electro-Muscle Stimulation. Thanks!!
Answers: If you cannot use your abs, EMS is vitally your only option for toning those muscles.
Also, what the previous answerer said is absolutely correct: abdominal exercises will not go and get rid of your belly fat. I see three options for you (or a combination of either of the three):
1. shrinking calorie intake (a diet system like Weight Watchers is pretty good for this)
2. get an aerobic workout to burn more calories (maybe a hand-bike would be a fitting option)
3. go on a low-carb diet such as Atkins (if your kidneys are healthy)
Low carb diets are safe as long as you're basically athletic and as long as you have fat to lose. I've been on Atkins for a moment or two over a week and my love handles are gone already. The results are pretty impressive. In case you don't know, low-carb diets work by putting your body within a state known as ketosis, where you're burning your excess body fat for strength instead of carbs.
If you do decide to give one of those diets a shot, you ought to get some ketosis strips to exam your urine with to make sure you're not going overboard. If the strips end up too gloomy, up your carb intake. Otherwise, your body may start eating your muscles!
Hope I've given you a few things to think about.
Good luck!
