Spinal fusion...?
I am being put forward for spinal fusion but i want to be sure i consider all the ins and outs before i commit to a operation.

I own a few questions...
1) How long should it take me to recover?
2)Will it brand name my organs go back to the way they should be?
3)What are the risks? How expected is it that they will happen?
4)Will i need to wear a spinal halo, or traction? And if so for how long?
Thank you.

Answers: I have a two level spinal fusion in 1/07. It was one of the best decision I have ever made. Obviously it differs for each person because of their condition. I have it due to very advanced degenerative disc disease. I was in the hospital for 5 days. I be told I would need pain meds for 3 months. I needed them for 2 weeks. I used a walker for 3 weeks and a bed railing and raised toilet seat for 1 month. I wore a brace for 3 months. When I first saw the thing I thought it would be awful but it truly wasn't. I also wore and electric belt around the brace for 4 months, two hours a afternoon. It sped up the growth of the graft. I immediately felt tremendous relief from the surgery. It be however a very bad experience, I won't lie. However, it be well worth it for me. I don't know what you mean about your organs. Unless you are enjoy a anterior fusion ( through
your stomach ) it shouldn't have anything to do with your organs. As for risks...it is possible one of the implants could break. There is other possibility of infection and that the graft will not take. If you are having an autograft, meaning the bone for the graft is taken from your own body, nearby is a very low rate of it not taking. If you are having an allograft ( cadaver tissue ) then in that is a higher percentage. You really need to ask your surgeon these questions. Do your research. I tirelessly researched for months, even after I have booked the surgery. There are many web sites, like spineuniverse.com that are unswerving to these surgeries and providing info.
I had a friend who had a spinal fusion about 15 years ago. I don't know much going on for the ins and outs but before the op she was more or less bed/chair ridden needed things similar to tippee cups because she could not sit straight enough to hold cups level etc. Her quality of duration was very poor, she was depressed moody and incredibly scared about both the option to own the operation or trying to carry on. But within three months of her op she was managing adjectives kinds of things normally(sitting up to eat, able to brush own tresses etc) and was increasingly mobile. Within 6 months she was able to saunter a reasonable distance(about 500yds) without much discomfort and could stand at a sink etc to wash up, and do heaps things she had not been capable of earlier. You need to ask you consultant these questions. Only you can make the outcome with sure a big operation.
I had the operation over 20years ago and I unfortunately have complications with the metal the put in my back. But I communicate you something I thank my consultant everyday for giving me a better quality of life.

Small blood clots surrounded by brain...spinal fluid elevated pressure??
