Spinal fusion??

I will be having a spinal fusion surgery on the 30th of this month... is anyone familiar with this type of surgery?? the sense i am having this surgery is because i have severe scoliosis (52 degrees)... i'm getting super nervous something like the surgery... any advice??

Answers:    Yes, I'm quite familiar next to the procedure. I had a 60 degree curve when I was fused.

You'll own meds to help with the pain. You'll start out near stronger meds and then wean yourself from them over time. So, yes, it does hurt, but you shouldn't be left hurting.

Your hospital stay will probably be between four and seven days. Teens typically heal quicker than adults and so their hospital stay is smaller number.

As for what they do, each case is different. Here's one possible scenerio. Its incomplete as I'm describing things pretty quickly. The amount of time spent doing things will probably differ. Maybe even the instruct that things are done will differ. But it will give you kind of an idea of what happen. Just take it with a grain of brackish.

You'll arrive at the hospital early to check in. You'll change into your gown and procure an IV hooked up. You will talk to your nurse(s) and perhaps a couple of other staff members. You'll after get put to sleep (injected through the IV that you had put in earlier). The operation consequently happens. You'll wake up, probably in the ICU, but possibly within your hospital room. You'll have a few things still hooked up to you (IV's, oxygen monitor, etc.). Probably on the first or second day after surgery, you'll be shown how to sit and then stand. You'll be capable of take walks up and down the hallway but you'll tire summarily. Your IV will be removed in a couple of days as will the catheter you've had in you since the surgery. You'll be allowed to dance home once your stomach starts rumbling, you're eating, and going to the bathroom. When you are in the hospital, your scar will be checked by a doctor respectively day.

If you haven't discussed this, there's a couple of things, off-topic, that will make life easier.

o Make sure you own a robe in case you get up within the middle of the night when the house is colder. The surgery may mess up your body's temperature control.

o Get a toilet seat extender so that you don't own to squat as far. These also have handles and certainly made my life span a lot easier. Since your chest muscles are fine, you'll be able to use them to raise and lower yourself.

o It might be nice to return with a "grabber" which will help you pick things up from the floor.

o You may or may not have a walker when you return with home from the hospital (probably not, but...). I did and discovered that I had to meneuver through the bathroom door sideways because the walker was too wide-ranging. This works, but it may be a bit more difficult.

o You will be sleeping an awful lot. This is a combination of your body needing rest and the pain meds knocking you out. Expect it.

o When I be in my bed, my wife made kind of a "nest" with pillows so I wouldn't roll out. I don't usually roll but I think it made both of us feel better. You might want to do the same.

o It will be sympathetic for you to sit in a chair with arms when you're have you meals and are sitting at the dining room table. Since your chest muscles are fine, you'll be able to use them to raise and lower yourself.

There's lots of stuff I haven't covered. I hope you'll email me if you hold any additional questions.
just relax. here is really nothing to this kinda surgery. just take it jammy and try not to tense your back muscles after too much. and dont hesitate to pilfer the pain meds if your doctor gives them. and dont worry too much going on for being kids puffy in your face afterwards, my patients that hold this done is always worried about that. it is just how they own you positioned in the or Scoliosis? No, but I broke my neck in 3 places surrounded by a car accident. The fusion is pretty serious, and it took some time to recover, but I did restore your health fully. The only wierd thing is, you will be fractionally shorter. When they fuse the vertebrae, the pads contained by between are gone. A small price to pay.
Every surgery has risks of course, but nuerosurgery have come a long way. My prayers for a speedy recovery are with you.
Yes my scoliosis progressed to roughly 55 degrees before surgery.
I was 17 almost 18 when I have the surgery. I'm 21 years old now and I do not have a curve or hump on my put a bet on anymore.
I remember crying on the way to the operating room because I was scared. They calmed me down, later passed me out.
To pass me out they gave me gas, and then a hypodermic after the gas passed me out, to KEEP me asleep. The surgery was about 5 hours long.
I woke up and saw my mom at the side of the bed.
I was NOT within any pain, I was out o it and was lone thinking "okay...i had surgery...now im awake..joy.nought special.i wanna go back to sleep." those were my thoughts.
lots of sleeping daylight 1 and 2. Day 2 or 3 I had some trouble with pain and the doctors did their best to hold the pain down. For me days 2-4 were the worst pain but after that everything be great !

Day 3 I could stand up beside my bed, and sit in a chair.
Day 4, they had me up walking around.babe-in-arms steps of course.
Day 5, I had a shower all by myself and I could even totter around the entire hospital.
They sent me home that day becuase i was able to get through and i had a poop ! (i had to poop twice becuase i didnt realize the first time that you have to SHOW them your poop previously they let you go haha)

i had a big heating pad thing over my scar.no backbrace or anything.so i had to be exceedingly careful not the bend and twist.
getting into a car lacking bending or twistng was pretty hard and funny !!

I was completely stale pain meds less than a week after I got home.

I be a little depressed becuse i couldnt do too much (like partying and dancing for example) but at least i could still step out and see my friends.

for the first week it was hard becuase you cant move too much..so my mom had to facilitate me with my shoes and stuff haha.

a month later i was much happier..i be back to being independant. maybe even smaller quantity than a month.

3 months later i was excercising again :) pretty physical again.

6 months later would nickname myself completely recovered.
i did some handstand and cartwheels and went on a rollercoaster :)

and now its like nought ! :)

so id say once you get olden the first week or two..you'll be just fine :)

oh yea..and i havent had any back problems since later.
and i can wear whatever clothes i want now!

seeing yourself in the mirror after surgery is strange becuase you're a different shape and it looks funny. after that, your backbone and stuff actually straighten out a bit more and you start to look REALLY good.

DON'T SMOKE POT! i did..and when i did, i forgot about my backbone, and i twisted and stuff...bad for the recovery process.

if you have any question or need any support you can email me lit_limp(a)hotmai. and i can send you before after pics if you want
