Spinal tap/lumbar puncture strain?
i'm getting a spinal tap tomorrow because last winter i had these excruciating headache, and they lasted for about two months, and NOTHING worked, and NO ONE could figure out what be wrong with me, and they've come back, and i've had them for four weeks very soon.
so...
1. do spinal taps hurt? people have said that it depends on how capably you can handle pain. i think i can bar it pretty well. does this mean it won't hurt if i have an anesthetic?
2. i've hear that spinal taps cause headaches, will this formulate me worse?
Answers: They usually give you a local anesthesia before they do the procedure. It may sting alittle but no severe pain. You may discern a tingling if they touch a nerve. No pain that is intolorable. They usually hold you lay flat for a few minutes, this is to avoid having the headaches. It is a very hasty procedure. What they will do with the fluid is check for white blood cells, which indicates an infection, red blood cells, do a glucose and protein, and also do a culture to check for any germs.
Hi. I'm a student nurse, so I have seen this time and time again. When giving a patient a lumbar puncture, you are usually given a local anaesthetic to numb the nouns so the pain should be somewhat lessened.
However, because it is only a local anaesthetic it may feel for a moment uncomfortable. If you have a high cramp tolerance like you say then you should be fine, within my opinion. If you want to get to the bottom of why you have be having these headaches, then really it is of utmost hurry to have it, no matter how much it hurts. Sorry to break it to you.
Lumbar punctures can cause headache in some people, although this appears to happen drastically rarely. A sore back is more likely! So this is the motivation why you will probably be advised to lie down for 6 hours after your lumbar puncture.
Trust me, you will be fine. Hope this helps. Good luck :] x
