What are the nouns likelihood for discectomy and/or spinal fusion?

is subsequent pain always felt after the procedure and if so, for how long? what are the probability of having to use a wheelchair long-term after?

Answers:    I am fused from T1-L5 with C-D rods- in 1991. I don't remember how long the twinge lasted. But I went back to work, unpaid, after 3 months without pain. I never used a wheelchair. I was markedly, very pleased with the results.
There is always stomach-ache following any operation and discectomy is no different. What is different is that if your disc problem is causing your sciatica, you might wake up and find it gone! Success rates depend on who is doing the procedure, and what the signs and symptoms are. Discectomy will not cure back twinge. Pretty much nothing will get rid of back cramp for ever, but there are things you can do to help yourself, such as going to a chiropractor. In the USA you have to hold three months' chiropractic treatment before you have a discectomy, otherwise you can sue the surgeon for malpractice. They've got a much better freedom of information perform than we do, so trust their stats.

Discectomy works really well when there is clear evidence (on an MRI or whatever) of protrusion of disc material on to the brashness roots. Done well, it can make an enormous difference to the patient's enthusiasm. My daughter had it done in March 2007 and it has pretty much cured her sciatica (although she still have some back pain). I had a disc removed where that clear evidence wasn't clear, and it didn't work nearly as ably, because my pain wasn't solely due to disc protrusion but also to arachnoiditis. I do have to use a wheelchair, but that's not directly due to the surgery, which certainly gave me eighteen months of reasonable life up to that time the pain returned.

Spinal fusion is to be avoided if at all possible, because all it does is verbs the stress from the fused joint to those above and below, and you can end up having relentless operations and fusions. Please, please if this is for you, please go and see a chiropractor before you hold surgery. If I had done that when my back first hurt years ago, I wouldn't be using a wheelchair today, and I wouldn't be in strain. It's not free to see a chiropractor, but how much is a pain-free life and a working spine worth?
I had a fusion at 3 years of age and never had long residence pain. I even have a few wires broken and no pain. I be going to be in a wheelchair anyways due to spina bifida. Look at www.spinal-foundation.org. They seem to have a inimitable and above all cautious approach. But as my GP said to me 'There's a lot they don't know just about backs'. Tread carefully.
