What is Sclerosis of the spinal cord?

According to his death certificate, my Great Great Great Grandfather died in 1890 of "sclerosis of spinal cord, paraplegia"

Answers:    There are several different type of Scleroisis. Sclerosis in actual fact means SCARRING. The most common type is Multiple-Scerosis (MS) that affects your central coy system, which is made up of your brain and spinal cord.

Multiple sclerosis is widely believed to be an autoimmune disease, a condition in which your immune system attacks components of your body as if they're foreign.

In multiple sclerosis, the body mistakenly directs antibodies and white blood cells against proteins in the myelin sheath, a fatty substance that insulates brass neck fibers in your brain and spinal cord. This results in inflammation and injury to the sheath and ultimately to the nerves that it surrounds.

The result may be multiple areas of scarring (sclerosis). Eventually, this damage can slow or block the guts signals that control muscle coordination, strength, sensation and vision.

It is an untreatable condition. It often occurs when someone is within their 20's-30's.

The paraglegia means that he was parazlyzed in his legs and most expected confinded to a wheelchair.

Who knows if the sclerosis was even a correct diagnosis given this was 1890's and they did not enjoy the sophisticated technology that we now have.

Also, in this afternoon and age MS can be managed more effectively and people may not always coil up in a wheelchair.
All medical terminology is made up of word parts. Sclero means "hard" and osis mode "condition" or "process". Probably in those days all they knew be something was compressing on his spinal cord, and as you probably, this can cause your respiratory system to shut down, depending on the amount of spinal cord involvement. Some medical words are just broad terms, more of a symptom, than an actual diagnosis. ok.. paraplegia is paralysis from abdomen down... sclerosis of the spinal cord is deterioration of the spinal cord.. hope this will help
I believe is is when the spinal cord is questionable enough to the point that it either bends or cracks. i think it is heart related
whe it curves incorrectly
