Answers: The spine... aside from the "bony/skeletal aspects" has the spinal cord as a main central uneasy system component. This is a very complex nervous system that communicates from between the brain and other body systems. The spinal cord and nerve roots/trunks that run (to and from it can be "traumatized" ...usually contained by the form of a mechanical injury (like a car accident or after a big spinal surgery). There is swelling that occur that effects the function of the nervous system (of the traumatized spine).
This is referred to as "spinal shock". It can take a varied amount of time to resolve and surrounded by some severe cases... permanent or partial damage remains. The neurologist can best give some hypothesis of what to expect and what are good or bad signs of recovery. Most are reluctant to right to be heard... they don't want to raise false hopes... yet, they don't want to shatter hope either. The longer interval of time without improvement the worst the prognosis (usually) but, not always. If near is a partial recovery... physical therapy can be very beneficial within most cases.

Spinal shock was first defined as a loss of sensation accompanied by motor paralysis with initial loss but gradual repossession of reflexes, following a spinal cord injury (SCI) -- most often a complete transection. Reflexes in the spinal cord caudal to the SCI are depressed (hyporeflexia) or not at home (areflexia), while those rostral to the SCI remain unaffected. Note that the 'shock' in spinal shock does not refer to circulatory collapse.
