What's worse? Having a herington (metal rod) surrounded by your posterior due to severe scoliosis or a spinal cord injury?
Answers: The spinal cord injury would be much worse, no contest.
I know a young lady who has a moment ago had the rod put in, and it has changed her vivacity for the positive. Not only does she stand a bit taller, but her entire attitude has changed. Having severe scoliosis totally messes with profoundly of stuff, particularly menstrual stuff, and now that her hormones are straightening out, she's really started to mature and become a hugely pleasant kid. :)
Spinal cord injury...Well, that could cause all kinds of problems...Main one human being paralysis...If you gave me a choice to not be able to bend down quite as usual or be confined to a wheelchair, I'm thinking I'd filch the rod and not bend, so long as I could walk!
With a spinal fusion, two or more of the vertebrae in the spine are united together so that motion no longer occur between them. Bone grafts are usually placed around the section of the spine to be fused. The body then heal the grafts over several months which joins the vertebrae together. The bone for the graft may be taken from another bone in the tolerant (autograft) or from a bone bank (allograft). Metal rods, plates, screws and cages may also be used as an internal splint to hold the vertebrae together while the bone graft heal and the spine fuses. As an FYI, Harrington rods are rarely, if ever, used nowadays.
The spinal cord is impressively sensitive to injury. Unlike other parts of your body, the spinal cord does not have the ability to repair itself if it is damaged. Spinal cord injuries are described as any complete or incomplete. In a complete spinal cord injury there is complete loss of sensation and muscle function in the body below the level of the injury. In an incomplete spinal cord injury in that is some remaining function below the level of the injury. In most cases both sides of the body are affected equally.
Are you worried about spinal cord injury while you are have a fusion? There is a risk to every surgery. But if severe scoliosis is not corrected, you risk having heart and lung problems.

I have recently have an operation which i got 2 metal rods down each side of my spine. I have benefited abundantly from this. My worrys about being parralized are now adjectives over. And i also have perfect posture 24/7.
When you have a spinal cord injury i would meditate that their is a 50/50 chance that you would end up parallized.

Spinal cord injuries are presently not curable and wreak paralysis. People can generally walk with rods within their backs. Walking is always better than not being competent to walk. Definitely having a spinal cord injury when you'd most likely be paralyzed!
